In Memory Of
Nina Detzel McBride
1935 - 2017
Nina McBride passed away on December 6, 2017 at the Ames Family Hospice Center in Westlake, OH with her daughter by her side. She was preceded in death by her loving husband William McBride, parents George & Eva Detzel, brothers George, John, Paul & Martin, sisters Eva (Bell), Kathryn (Morisak), Rose (Brunson), Elizabeth (Smith), Margaret (Gearhart), Dorothy (Kozy), Mary (Currier) and dear friend, Elmer Poor. Nina leaves behind her daughter Brenda and son-in-law Matt Zelinski, grandson Ben and his wife Katie, granddaughter Rachael (Joyce) and her husband Jon, two beautiful great-grandchildren, Jacob & Maisie, and many, many, many nieces & nephews.
Nina graduated in 1953 from Akron East High School, received her nursing degree from Akron City Hospital in 1956, earned her Certified Occupational Health Nurse Certification in 1976 and received her BS in Health Care Administration from St. Joseph’s College in 1980. In 1998 she retired after 41 years of service from The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company as their Chief Occupational Health Nurse. After retirement, Nina volunteered at the Battered Women’s Shelter, Crisis Center, Summa Hospital and the Open M Clinic.
As is the case with all great nurses, Nina was driven by a strong desire to care for and protect others and was fiercely loyal to those she loved. Family was first followed by all things Ohio State. She enjoyed keeping track of her grandchildren and great grandchildren and held a secret special place in her heart for her buddy, Winchester. An avid tennis and football fan, you could always tell Nina was watching sports just by listening from anywhere in the house. Her recent move to the Brookdale Community in Westlake brought the opportunity to make new friends which we know she cherished. Nina/Mom/Grandma/GG/Friend will be missed by many.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Nina’s life will be held at a later date. Should friends desire, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, The Alzheimer’s Research Association or The American Heart Association.
Nina’s final words to us are from the poem Remember Me by Margaret Mead:
To the living, I am gone.
To the sorrowful, I will never return.
To the angry, I was cheated,
But to the happy, I am at peace,
And to the faithful, I have never left.
I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.
So as you stand upon a shore, gazing at a beautiful sea - remember me.
As you look in awe at a mighty forest and its grand majesty - remember me.
As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity - remember me.
Remember me in your heart, your thoughts, your memories of the times we loved,
the times we cried, the times we fought, the times we laughed.
For if you always think of me, I will never be gone.
