In Memory Of
Edna Ruth Woofter
1919 - 2017

Edna Ruth Woofter, 97, left this world for Heaven on February 25, 2017. Edna was well known to people in her hometown of Weston, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Louisville, Kentucky - all places where she worked professionally.
Edna was born on August 18, 1919 in Weston, West Virginia, where she lived with her family until her mid-20s. Following high school, Edna worked as a secretary for the Pure Oil Company until she was recruited to establish secretarial schools and train young women in secretarial skills. After conducting several such schools, Edna took a test for government service along with her students. Accepting a government job offered her during the war years led Edna to Washington D.C. where she resided for more than 30 years, working first in government and later as bookkeeper for Washington Stair and Ornamental Iron Works.
At Metropolitan Baptist Church on Capitol Hill, Edna taught a large Sunday School Class of young women and participated in Women's Missionary Union Work. Feeling called to ministry, Edna attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas and New Orleans Baptist Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana. After graduation, Edna returned to D.C. where she was offered the position of Director of the Johenning Baptist Center in S.E. D.C. The Center was a joint project of the D.C. Convention and the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board. Edna started programs in the community while the building was being built and continued as Director for 13 years, demonstrating her love for children and families.
Feeling the need for a Social Work education, Edna sought scholarship money to return to graduate school to earn a Master's in Social Work. Catholic University School of Social Work, recognizing Edna's invaluable work with families in S.E. D.C. offered Edna a full scholarship. Edna was hired by the D.C. Baptist Convention for a second time where she worked for several more years before accepting a position in Louisville, Kentucky, with the Baptist Board of Childcare where once again her love for children and families guided her work.
Edna worked in Louisville for more than 20 years before retiring at age 73. During her years in Louisville, Edna taught an Adult Women's Sunday School Class at St. Matthews Baptist Church for more than 25 years.
At the time of her death, Edna was residing in Ohio where her niece and nephew-in-law, Carol and Noel Walters, their daughters and grandchildren, lovingly cared for Edna.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Reese and Wilma Woofter; sister, Elsie Marie Henry, and brother, Herbert R. Woofter.
Edna will be laid to rest in Weston, West Virginia.
