Ethel Brown (Portis)
1926 - 2016
Ethel Brown (Portis) of Akron, OH departed this life June 6, 2016 at the age of 89. Born in Yantley, Alabama on August 22, 1926. She was the baby and the last of 13 children. She was born to Monk and Rosetta Portis. Ethel was a caring and kind wife, mother, loving grandmother, and great-grandmother. She helped raise and provide for her many grandchildren. More than anything she loved to cook (loved her chicken and dumplings and sweet potato pie), gardening, and being with family. Through her illness or any of life challenges she remained strong and positive. We could always depend on her to be there when needed. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; daughter, Wanda; son-in-law, Clifford; 1 grandchild; 1 great-grandchild; and 1 great-great-grandchild. She is survived by sons, John C., John A., Jimmy, Ronald, Duane (Jeraldine); and daughters, Joyce and Betty, all of Akron. She leaves behind 31 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; 38 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Carrie M. Brown; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. Family will receive friends on Monday June 13, 2016 from 10-12pm with the funeral service immediately following at Newcomer Funeral Home, 131 N. Canton Rd. Akron, OH 44305. Pastor Mark A. Ward officiating. Interment Lakewood Cemetery.
